Summer guide - How to take care of your skin and hair in the sun

The sun is shining and the days are longer, which means your skin and hair could use some extra love. Summer means more UV radiation, heat and moisture. This affects both how we feel and how our skin and hair react. That's why the summer beauty routine is all about strengthening and protecting, rather than treating. We want to support the skin and not overwork it. Switch to lighter products, think smart about cleansing, opt for gentler exfoliation and, of course, pay attention to sun protection. Here are our top tips to keep your skin and hair feeling their best this summer - whether you're spending it in a deckchair, at work or in the shade under a parasol.

SKIN CARE

Double cleansing - even in summer

It's not uncommon for skin to feel more unbalanced during the summer as sunscreen, sweat and makeup mix during the day. Therefore, skin may need a proper but gentle cleansing. In the Korean skincare routine, double cleansing is an important step. You start with an oil-based cleanser to dissolve dirt and SPF and massage in. This is followed by a water-based one to gently remove the rest and you get a good foundation for the next products. Double cleansing works well both morning and evening but also works only in the evening and then use your water-based cleanser in the morning.

Pause active ingredients if you know you are actively spending time in the sun

If you love being out in the sun or are planning to soak up the sun this summer, it's a good idea to review your routine. Active ingredients such as AHAs (e.g. glycolic acid), BHAs (such as salicylic acid) and vitamin A work by stimulating cell renewal and exfoliating, which means that the protective outer layer of the skin becomes thinner and more sensitive. Active sun exposure can increase the risk of hyperpigmentation, irritation and sun sensitivity

If you are consistent with sun protection, reapply during the day and avoid direct sun exposure, you can in many cases continue to use your active ingredients even during the summer. But if you know that you like to spend time in the sun, it is then better to put the active products on the shelf until the fall again.

During the summer, you can instead choose a milder exfoliation with enzymes.

Enzymes are often extracted from fruits such as papaya (papain) or pineapple (bromelain) that gently break down the bonds between dead skin cells and thus get a gentler exfoliation that suits most skin types, even skin that is more sensitive.

Switch to lighter products

With the change of seasons and warmer temperatures, it's good to adapt your routine to your skin's needs. Richer creams that have been a lifesaver during the colder months can be replaced with lighter gel-based moisturizers.

To keep your skin feeling its best all year round, it's important to adapt your skincare routine to the season. By listening to your skin and adapting your products, you can more easily maintain the balance of your skin.

A face mist is a real summer hero to have in your bag and can be used indefinitely to replenish moisture during the day. Especially in dry air or after hanging out at the beach.

Sunscreen - every day, always

Sunscreen is essential and the most important product in your routine to protect your skin from UV radiation, reduce the risk of pigmentation and work age-well! The most important thing when it comes to SPF is to have one adapted to your skin type and skin condition and be careful with reapplication for full protection. There is a jungle of different sunscreens out there with different compositions of UV filters chemical - physical - hybrid and a variety of textures. From serum-like to a little richer or why not stick formula or in mist form which can be beneficial when you are on the go and need a quick reapplication.

Look for a sunscreen that protects against both UVA & UVB radiation and preferably SPF 50 but at least SPF 30.

By finding an SPF you like, using the right amount and remembering to reapply, you give your skin the very best conditions to stay strong, protected and radiant whatever the season which is an investment in your skin health.

Cooling products

After a day in the sun, your skin can feel hot, tight and irritated. A cooling sheet mask is a real lifesaver. Like an SOS treatment for the skin to restore moisture balance and calm the skin. For an extra refreshing feeling, you can store your sheet mask in the fridge.
It's not just sheet masks that can give a cooling boost, but also eye cream, face mist or aloe vera gel can be cooled before use. A cool eye cream can help reduce puffiness and make you feel more alert. Taking a few minutes with chilled products can be a lovely and effective part of your summer routine.
In addition to cooling products, you can also use various tools that can work to drain and reduce swelling, such as Ice Globe.

HAIR CARE

Protect your hair from the sun

Just like the skin, the hair is affected by the sun's rays and it is therefore important not to forget to protect the hair from UV radiation as the hair strands can be damaged by the sun's rays. UVB radiation can break down the proteins in the hair shaft, while UVA can bleach color pigments, which means that both natural and colored hair can lose its luster faster and that you experience your hair as dry and frizzy.

Therefore, use leave-in products with UV protection or wear a hat/cap when the sun is at its strongest. If you don't have access to a hat to protect your scalp, you can also apply your regular sunscreen to your legs to protect your scalp.

Hair masks & scalp care are key

During summer, not only is your skin affected by the sun, heat and salt water, but your scalp and hair are also put under stress. A dry and unbalanced scalp can lead to itching, irritation and, in the long run, negatively affect hair quality.
Korean hair care focuses a lot on the scalp - the foundation of healthy hair and is often seen as an extension of skin care.

By regularly using deep cleansing and cooling scalp wraps, you can help balance the scalp, reduce excess sebum and prevent discomfort that can occur in the heat. A good benchmark is to use such a treatment about every third hair wash.
Feel free to complement with a nourishing hair wrap for the lengths - especially if your hair feels dry or brittle. These wraps add moisture, build up the hair's structure and give a silky finish. Also good to use nourishing leave-in products after washing to strengthen and moisturize hair.

Extra summer tips

When we talk about skincare, it's easy to focus on the face, but the body deserves just as much attention, especially during the summer months when we're exposed to more sun, sweat and SPF. Even though the skin on the body is often a little tougher than the face, it still needs protection from UV rays and nourishment and hydration to stay balanced.

Also, don't forget to exfoliate your body regularly to remove dead skin cells and give your skin a new glow. If you know you will be spending a lot of time in the sun, go for a gentle exfoliation. After exfoliation, the skin is more sensitive, so be sure to apply moisturizing lotion. Again, look for moisturizing ingredients such as aloe vera, glycerin or panthenol.

Last but not least, remember that your whole body needs SPF! Sunscreen isn't just for the beach, but should be used daily on exposed areas such as shoulders, arms, legs and décolletage.
